We hope you all had a peaceful holiday season filled with delicious food, friends & family, and some quiet time with a good book. We’ll be back to our regularly scheduled blogging next week, but meanwhile, they’re forecasting 5-8 inches of snow here in the New York area tonight. Obviously, that means one thing:

Snowball FightSnowball fight!

In preparation, I thought I’d put together a list of my five favorite books to cuddle up with during snow days:

1. The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey: This adult fiction book follows a homesteading couple in Alaska in 1920 and manages to be both dreamy and completely grounded in the sensory details of Alaska’s harsh beauty.

2. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman: The first in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy (middle grade/YA) follows young Lyra Belacqua as she journeys from Oxford College to the Far North.

3. Love Begins in Winter: Five Stories by Simon Van Buoy: Each of these sweet, melancholy love stories is the perfect companion to a nice mug of hot chocolate.

4. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater: This first installment in Maggie Stiefvater’s YA trilogy, which takes place in Minnesota, shows winter as a living, breathing, thing notable both for what it brings and what it takes away.

5. Iguanas in the Snow and Other Winter Poems/ Iguanas en la nieve y otros poemas de invierno by Francisco X. Alarcón, illustrated by Maya Christina Gonzalez: This delightful picture book collection of poetry in English and Spanish makes a perfect post-snowball-fight fireside read aloud.

What are your favorite books for snow days?
