How fun is your bookroom? Where does joy intersect with culturally responsive and diverse books?
A disproportionate number of books about BIPOC protagonists focus on their marginalization. Though it is important for children to understand the history and complexity of oppression, racism, and discrimination, children—especially Indigenous children, Black children and children of color—also deserve to see themselves thrive and to experience the joy of being part of a loving community.
Join three of our outstanding authors in a panel sure to be fun, engaging, and celebratory of all aspects of joy in children’s literature:
Kelly J. Baptist, author of The Electric Slide and Kai
Samara Cole Doyon, author of Magic Like That
David Anthony Durham, author of The Shadow Prince
They will be sharing their inspiration behind their books, the importance of showcasing joyful books as well as serious subjects and content in your library, and immediate classroom applications that you can take with you into your respective setting.
Whether you are a teacher, librarian, administrator, or parent, we look forward to having you for this incredibly timely and essential conversation about BIPOC joy in children’s books.
